Sokka the 57th - [Action/Voice]

[Sokka has some messages to knock out of the way. He doesn't bother with a filter for the first one, mainly because he feels like being somewhat of a jerk and making light of Haruhi's ridiculous relationship with her 'minions'. In spite of that, Sokka's tone is pretty flat. There's no excitement here and it's pretty obvious through the message something is bothering him.]

Hey Haruhi, feel free to send Naoki over. He can do his thing now. [Oh wait...] Uh, after Leon takes a look over it, I guess.

Uh, hey Diana. Can I ask a favor?

[This last one he almost backs out of doing. But it's been a few days now and things haven't changed. Maybe this will help.]

So... hypothetically speaking, how do you make up it up to someone you really care about for something that really hurt them when what you did... there was nothing you could do about it?

[With things so awkward at home with Suki, Sokka has been spending less time there. It's hard to spend time with your girlfriend when she's still upset with you, but being polite about it. So this leaves him working at the smithy for longer hours, actually doing homework at the library, and once more taking part in his neverending quest to find a hat that really says Sokka to him. Through all this, he is accompanied by a certain cheeky lemur hanging around on top of his head, shoulder, or getting into things he shouldn't.

He will, at least, drag himself home for dinner. Delicious, awkward dinner.]

[ buffy wants to tell him that...people certainly can see things the same way. that just last week, she and spike had come to a very mutual (and loving in its own way) conclusion. but even she can tell that describing her same-minded break up will not be helpful. ]

You...Sokka, are you sure about that? Or is this butterflies-in-the-stomach kinda stuff?

I spent nine months waiting to see her here or back home. But all of that happened in the blink of an eye for her.

My sister showed up, recently. She'd just seen me the day before. I hadn't seen her for nearly two years. [ buffy tries not to count or talk about the week and a half that dawn had been in luceti. ] It didn't change what we are or what we mean to each other.

[ gently, carefully: ] Maybe you shouldn't hold the time difference over her head, Sokka.

I'm not! [Well, not intentionally.]

But maybe it just means more to me because I waited for it longer.

Playing the what means more to who game is like walking on thin ice.

[ it was how she lost riley, after all. ]

Yeah, I guess you're right. So uh, not so much on mentioning that.

[ occasionally, she has them. ]

And a slightly preemptive suggestion? Avoid the whole realm of ultimatums. They seem like a good idea at the time when emotions are lava-hot but...they always, always backfire.

Believe me, I know.

[His sister kind of loves ultimatums when she's upset. Sokka has kind of learned to not let them get under his skin, even for the really barbed ones. But that comes from knowing her his whole life. Obviously it's different with his girlfriend.]

[Once you weed through the bad ideas, Buffy actually has some pretty good ideas.]

[Hearing that made Sokka think of what it would be like if he was dating Buffy and not Suki. As he briefly considers that scenario, he finds that it ends with him jumping off a cliff. Huh.]

[ okay. marginally worse than abandoning her in a helicopter or skipping town on her graduation. perhaps tied with spike's sunnydale exploding self-sacrifice, though. ]

If there was really nothing you could do about it...then she'll manage understanding.

Yeah... anything like this happened to you before?

I've argued with people I -- with boyfriends, y'know, in the past. Big arguments, small arguments. Some don't get solved but most do.

[ your this has been very vague so far. ] I know I'm guilty of holding things against people that weren't even their fault. We can't all be saints, right? But we can work at it.

Yeah, I guess we can't be... [A pause.] What's a saint?

Someone perfect. Flawless. [ sympathetic to the serious situation, buffy offers him the colloquial definition. the one she had intended. no reason to dick around with the literal meaning. ]

Oh, right. Yeah, not too many of those running around...

If we find one, we should put him or her in a zoo. Charge for admission.

[That does earn a grin.]

I don't think he'd stay perfect for long with that kind of humiliation.

I hear that's the usual problem with catching perfection.

Oh. It's a metaphor. [He was picturing it in more literal terms. This is less amusing.]
