Sokka the 60th - [Action/Voice]

[Today? Sokka is at the smithy. Honestly, are we really surprised by this? Seriously, this is kind of his thing. He is waiting for Winry, though. He wants her input on a project.]

It's been two weeks since the equinox. And we're finally getting a break from all the rain. Funny how the new season just kind of Springs up on you like that, am I right?

[Oh Sokka, you are hi-lar-ious. He wipes a tear from his eye even, pleased that he managed to let such a well-seasoned joke be released into the wild. Oh, speaking of wild.]

No but seriously, now that it's getting that time of year, how many people out here hunt and fish? I know, I know. Boo hoo, the talking animals. I've heard it. But is there anyone here besides me who still does that kind of thing?

[Also, lately Sokka is keeping a new little trinket in one of his pockets. It's something he intends to give to someone at the right time. After the small blunder of forgetting to bring it on Suki's birthday, he's keeping it all the time on him now. So even as he's walking away from home, he'll often put his hand in his pocket to make sure it's still there. He probably won't show it to just anyone, though.]

Well it is kind of obvious.

[He spots himself in the reflection of some armor. He grins and flexes just a bit.]

Hey, before you zone out for the rest of the day, can I borrow you for a minute?

Yeah, what do you need?

Take a look at this. I got a request before the last experiment. It's nearly finished. It's uh, not my usual kind of thing. [If it wasn't for that bike he helped her with, he would've had a lot harder time with this.] It's a wheelchair... for a mermaid.

[He steps out of the way, where an incomplete version of this is upside down. It's mostly missing some of the trimming to make it fancy, as well as push bar in the back.]

A wheel chair, huh? I'm sure we - that's upside down right?

Of course it's upside down! Do you think I'm stupid enough to mess something up that badly!?

[Honestly!]

The only problem I foresee is getting wheels wide enough.

[He gives one of the wheels a spin.]

I think I've got them wide enough. Although the tires are gonna be the hard part. Although that's nothing new.

That's what I meant. Where are we going to find that much rubber?

Well... we could always make our own, if we can't find enough. We just need a rubber tree, right?

Do they grow here?

[He grins and stands up straighter.]

I just need to look up what the tree looks like. If there's one out there, then I'll definitely know about it. I haven't spent a year out there hunting just because meat is tasty. I've been learning all the forest paths, the kind of tracks the animals leave, and the leaves from every tree.

I'm sure that can easily be found in the library. Have you thought about handle bars?

Yeah, that's what I was- wait what? [Handle bars, where did that come from?] It's not like she's going to be going very fast on it...

No, in the back here. So it can be pushed.

Oh. [He thinks back to the original wheelchair he started with. The one he started working on, but ultimately scrapped for a new model.]

Yeah... I think the other one had something like that. Thought this one might need something different.

Anything in mind?

The other one just had two handles in the back, about the size of your hand. Not bad if you're pushing someone around on something flat, but you get it on rougher terrain and it's harder to use. What it really needs is something with more leverage.

[He thinks about it. There's something they have in the smithy that would be perfect for it. He's trying to remember what it is...]

[Aha, that's it. They use it for moving around heavy equipment. The hand truck. He walks over it and tucks it out of the space where it's at. He keeps tugging on it until it comes free, falling back as he does. No harm done and it's free, although his necklace unknowing came free as he did. He stands back up and wheels it toward her.]

See? I just need to make something like this. [Oh, inspecting it, is she? He's confident in his work. He's come a long way from happy scribbles on paper for his ideas.]

Oh, that! Yeah, that should work.

Is it solid, or...?

Of course it's solid! I've even rolled around in it a little. In fact, you can take a shot at it, if you want.

No, I think you should make the frame hollow instead. The lighter it is the less it will push down in the sand, right?

... oh. That kind of solid. Yeah, it's already hollow.

[He's come to realize people expect him to fail. He figured Winry was skeptical of it being sturdy enough to even stand.]
