[One day before his second draft. Also his second birthday in Luceti. Funny how things work out. Not that he's thinking much about the second part. He's aware of the fact he's seventeen now, but there's more important stuff to attend to today.

First on his agenda? He has 'presents' for Suki and Katara. Although they're not really typical presents. Just new weapons to help them out in the battle. He may have been saving them for a later occasion, but there's no point in that now. After his morning workout (whether it's with Master Souji or on his own), he'll have to go tracking the two of them down to make the delivery. After that, he'll also be tracking down Haruhi, most likely to her house, to deliver a certain bird into her care.

Since he's neglected it for the past week, he'll spend most of the day at the smithy. No doubt a lot of people are going to want to drop in and want to get their weapons sharpened before the big battle. He can't let Ed have all the fun, right?

At some point during the day, he decides to try and keep things light (yet slightly morbid) with a question for the journals.]

So, I guess tomorrow we get to find out if the meat we eat is also the talking kind too. Anyone have any messages they want me to pass on to next week's steak dinner?

[ she aims for pleasant and doesn't fall too short of the mark; after all, the last week hasn't been all bad. just mostly. ]

[A glance back and then a nod.]

My little friend here needs some spiffing up.

[ she presents the scythe. it is in pretty good shape -- buffy has long been the sharpener of her own weapons -- but there is something to be said for depending on your comrades. ]

[Oh, her scythe. He takes it and takes a look at the blade. Yeah, it is kind of getting a bit dull, isn't it?]

Yeah, I can tell. [But he nods.] I can drop it off at your place once I'm done.

I know it probably goes without saying, but...careful with her, okay? [ normally it would bug her to see the slayer scythe in someone else's hands, here...but sokka is like an honourary member. if she is going to trust anyone with the weapon's care, it would be him. ] The terms one of a kind and older than the written word both apply here.

It doesn't look that old. [Old weapons should be ancient looking, dull, falling apart, and otherwise useless. That's just how logic works.]

It moisturizes. I hear that's how you survive loads and loads of birthdays.

[ see what she did there, sokka? ]

[... no, not really. She just gets a blank look.]

Uh... I guess?

[ a pause. ] I don't actually moisturize my scythe, you know. It was a joke. And a segue. [ a deep breath. ] Happy birthday?

[Blink blink. It takes a second but then...]

Oh. Oh! Right. Uh, thanks. [Sheepish smile.] Pretty good timing, huh?

Fairly good. I mean -- look at your party's guest list.

... yeah. I guess it gives me something to think about.

[He's not really too thrilled about turning seventeen here.]

I've been charged with giving you a birthday hug. We can get it out of the way now or just pretend it happened and back up each other's lies?

What? Birthday hug? Who told you to do that!?

[Okay, his two top suspects are Winry and Katara. Suki would never be so cruel.]

It's a sister's prerogative to set up elaborate birthday tortures.

Oh great. [How many more hugs will he have to suffer today? Ugh.] Okay, so let's not and say we did.

[ she goes for mock insult. ] My hug's aren't that bad. But okay -- you've got a deal.

I'd hate to put you through something you wouldn't even enjoy.

Who says I don't enjoy hugs? [He does. Sometimes. When there's a good reason.]

Oh, no -- hugs in general? Amazing. But I understand, my hugs are way intimidating. They're just that good.

Because you break bones? The first few weeks I had the super strength, I couldn't even hug my own girlfriend.

W-well, I was gonna say because they're filled with so much love and cozy feelings but -- sure, bone-breaking works too.
