Sokka the 57th - [Action/Voice]

[Sokka has some messages to knock out of the way. He doesn't bother with a filter for the first one, mainly because he feels like being somewhat of a jerk and making light of Haruhi's ridiculous relationship with her 'minions'. In spite of that, Sokka's tone is pretty flat. There's no excitement here and it's pretty obvious through the message something is bothering him.]

Hey Haruhi, feel free to send Naoki over. He can do his thing now. [Oh wait...] Uh, after Leon takes a look over it, I guess.

Uh, hey Diana. Can I ask a favor?

[This last one he almost backs out of doing. But it's been a few days now and things haven't changed. Maybe this will help.]

[Filtered from Housemates (and Haruhi as an afterthought)]

So... hypothetically speaking, how do you make up it up to someone you really care about for something that really hurt them when what you did... there was nothing you could do about it?

[With things so awkward at home with Suki, Sokka has been spending less time there. It's hard to spend time with your girlfriend when she's still upset with you, but being polite about it. So this leaves him working at the smithy for longer hours, actually doing homework at the library, and once more taking part in his neverending quest to find a hat that really says Sokka to him. Through all this, he is accompanied by a certain cheeky lemur hanging around on top of his head, shoulder, or getting into things he shouldn't.

He will, at least, drag himself home for dinner. Delicious, awkward dinner.]

[There's no doubt that will come later, which is fine. He settles for pulling her closer with one around her. He'd been worried she wouldn't say it in return. Hearing it is just as much reassuring for him, especially with his own worries that this whole thing was one sided.]

Well it wasn't easy... but you're worth the wait. [And that one was from Ceodore.]

[Red, red, red. But it's a nice kind of embarrassment, so she's smiling anyway; he can thank Ceodore later, because that was a pretty darn good line to give her. She ducks her head, feeling more like a little girl than the strong warrior she's used to being. Relax, Suki, relax. Don't do happy cartwheels or anything, that'll just look ridiculous.]

I'm... not going anywhere, now. I'm glad I'm with you.

[He leans in for another quick kiss. He usually doesn't have this effect on her. He kind of likes it. (Or maybe the makeup usually hides it). ]

Yeah, same here. [A pause as he remembers something else.]

Sorry about your shoes.

[HOLD THE PHONE]

You did that!?

[... eheh.]

I kind of turned into my dad while wearing them. His feet are a lot bigger than yours.

...Oh... [That's why, huh. As irritating as that is, she can't really get mad at him for that, either. Stupid Malnosso.] Are you... okay?

[If she was hoping to get him to talk about how he felt about being his dad, she should have been more specific. Because unfortunately...]

My feet were a little sore for a little bit, but it didn't hurt much. But it was a shame about the shoes. Seriously, they were the most comfortable shoes I've ever been in! I never knew you had it so good.

[...Well he certainly seems alright. She makes a note to keep an eye out, though. She knows he's pretty darn close to his dad, after all.]

I'm sure I can get more shoes, Sokka. [Even if she is going to miss them. They really were comfy.]

[Inside, he suffers. It's just a cruel reminder that coming up will be the fourth birthday he spends without his dad. But getting that out of him? Not going to be easy.]

Yeah, I guess so. They just won't be the same...

...Since it's the Malnosso's fault this happened, why don't we just ask for another pair? [Ooh.] And one for you, too, if you want.

[sob suki, he thought you loved him.]

... I think maybe we should just find you a new pair - I'll find something completely different and we'll leave the nice blue man alone.

...What, are you nervous? [What is it about this nice blue man :|]

Me, nervous? About what? [The nice blue man who may not be so nice, so it's best not to bother him.]

I was just wondering. [Hmmm. She doubts that shoes are really an issue here - or even Bil, for that matter. Now that she gives it some real thought, it was more of a distraction than anything. Sneaky, Sokka. It's a sobering thought, though.]

...When I asked if you were okay, though... I meant about your dad.

[Seriously, who cares about shoes with that hanging over your head.]

... oh.

[He sobers up at that, turning his head to look down at his feet. He'd spent a lot of time deliberately not thinking about it and frankly, what happened with Suki had been a great distraction from that.]

When my dad went off to fight in the war, we didn't see him for two years. Those were some of the hardest years we ever had. [The hardest was what followed after their mom died.] And it wasn't just because we had more stuff to do. He wasn't there when I turned fourteen, so I didn't go ice dodging. And he wasn't there for my fifteenth either. After the war was over, I knew that this time, he was going to be there. I'd be old enough to get engaged, if I wanted, and he'd be able to tell me all the stuff I needed to know. But.... well, then Luceti happened.

[And he's sure he doesn't need to explain that. Nevermind that his seventeenth is inching closer. His fourth birthday in a row without the person he idolizes the most being there for it.]

Sokka... [She purses her lips, then reaches out to touch his arm. It's hard, being away from your family- she understands that, too. Her separation from Kyoshi and the other warriors wasn't nearly as bad as what he's suffered, but... still. It hurts.] I know we'll make it back there someday, and you'll see him again. You'll have so much to tell him... but I'm sure it'll work out. It has to.

[Maybe she's too naive- it's only been half a year, after all, not even long enough to merit celebrating a birthday away from home. But she has to keep hoping. Giving up isn't an alternative for her now.]

[He knows he'll make it back. He just doesn't know when. He's become more used to the idea that it could be years. ~~And it's all Xion's fault, stupid time skip!~~]

I know. But we've been gone so long... and he doesn't even know it. No time has passed at all for him. [Which means that this time, he doesn't even miss them.]

If time stands still as long as we're here... does that mean that whatever we do here doesn't matter...?

[Talk about your sobering thought.]

[It would be so easy to be the pessimist here. But he's not going to do that. Not when they're having a moment like this. He gives her a slight squeeze from side hug.]

It matters here and now.

[That's... really nice, actually. A nice thing to hear, especially from a realist like Sokka. She smiles in response, shifting a little closer to him and resting her head on his shoulder.]

Yeah... it matters to us.

Mmhm.

[In turn, he rests his cheek on the top of her head. It's nice to be just doing this, talking, and not just diving straight into their usual flirtations and making out. Maybe this is a big step for them. He should ask.]

So... now that I've said it and you've said it, does that make things different? Are we... super dating?

"Super-dating"? [Leave it to Sokka to give their relationship a ridiculous name. She does like the sound of it, though- like everything they'd done before was training for the real thing, and they were ready to take that next step. Maybe this strange little fight of theirs was something they needed to have happen, so they could learn from it and keep progressing from now on. It's... a nice thought. Yeah, really nice.]

What kinds of things happen when you're super dating?

[Now that he thinks about it, he's not really sure where they go from here. I mean, the obvious stuff is way inappropriate, seeing as how they aren't married. And they've already moved in together - in separate rooms together, at least. So what's the next step after that?]

I don't know. I've never really thought about it. Any ideas?

[Now she kind of wishes she'd paid more attention to the other people in her village- you know, the ones dating and getting married and everything...]

Maybe just go out more often, in more special ways? I mean... you know. Plan outings, go to more... [Oh dear, now she's blushing.] ...Private spots.

[Sokka feels the same. This would be so much easier with some dating advice from his old man. Maybe he could look up that kindly advice-dispensing old man again. Wait, did Sokka even remember to get his name?]

Uh, right. Special! And private. [He might be getting a little red himself. He ends up scratching he back of his neck awkwardly.] Maybe... somewhere together, for a few nights. Just us. [That wasn't too big a first step, was it?]
