Sokka the 21st - [Action/Voice]

[After a month of planning and a week of top secret work, Sokka has finished the final touches on the prototype canoe for the fleet that has yet to be built. And by finished, he of course made use of Usopp constantly. But what are across-town neighbors for anyway? So after getting his pride and joy finished, including a nice coat of paint (it's blue!) with the Water Tribe Emblem on both sides and in what is most likely a suicidal move, the Straw Hat flag mounted on the back.

An eager Sokka has already managed to pull it all the way past House #4 (with wheels obviously!) so he can test if its seaworthy (well, riverworthy) as he rides it down to the river all the way back towards his home next to the barracks. Even though he isn't planning on getting to it, he's brought along his fishing pole and some bait, just in case he gets swept down to the lake and has to survive on his own fishing and cooking skills for weeks on end while waiting for a rescue that might not ever come. So. Just in case. People may of course notice him sailing downstream and possibly try to drop things on him as he goes under the bridges.

Before he'll go though, he'll 'accidentally' leave his journal open for an 'accidental' voice post.]

This is Sokka. Casting off into the big, er, small blue... maybe kind of greenish brownish river in my vessel, The Insert Name Here. Wish me luck.

It's just a canoe. Only enough for two or three people to fit.

Or maybe we could start taking shifts. [So not fair - he gets to build a BOAT and she... practices with her bo in the living room. So, okay, maybe it's fair. Still. Outside. Spring! She wants!]

Nice! And it floats?

Yeah. I could do that. The smithy keeps getting new workers anyway. I think I can probably arrange an extra day off for myself a week now.

Of course it floats! I'm in it right now.

That's great, Sokka. It would be good if we could start that.

So, you and Usopp, huh? What did you make it out - we don't exactly have whale skin here. [Read: You're sure it floats, right?]

Maybe I'll start working on a schedule. [What has he gotten himself into!?]

We found some wood to work with. [Unspoken: they also cut down a tree.]

Oh yes. You know I've missed those. [Dry sarcasm, she has it.]

...really? That must have been different. How did you waterproof it? [Yeah, public and easily viewable and all that: What did you do?]

Schedules are important, Katara. One day you'll see that.

Well actually Usopp handled that for the most part.

Will you be allowing for separate bathroom breaks?

Oh, okay. Then I'm sure it's fine. [She saw Nami's weapon, after all.] What are you going to do with it?

... I'll work something out.

[Way to have faith in him! Sisters.] Take it down the lake. Maybe do some fishing. We still plan to make a few more boats, of course.

...you're going to catch the talking fish?

Yes. Yes I am. We'll find out whether they can talk or not when they're not in water.

Sokka. That's just -- unnecessary! How can you eat a talking animal?

It won't be talking when I eat it! I always cook my meat first, Katara. You know that.

That's not the point and you know it.

Look. They're not any different than animals back home. The only difference is that everything here is translated. No language barriers at all, not even with the food. They aren't any smarter or intelligent than back home. We just understand them, that's all.

More importantly, do you think the meat we get in the store isn't talking animals? Do you think the Malnosso care enough to make sure our meat couldn't ask to not be chopped up first?

Do you see any slaughterhouses around here? Do you know where the meet comes from? Or how about eels - seen any of them around? Sea prunes? I don't think so. We don't know where the food is coming from, Sokka.

And how do you know that the fish aren't any smarter than the ones back home? Have you talked to them? No? What if you found out that they were able to carry on a conversation -- would you still eat them?

Exactly. We don't know! At least this way, I'll know where some of my food is coming from. Who knows what we're eating now. [The Soylent green is people. Don't eat it.]

As for being smart? I think that would depend entirely on how good of conversationalists they are. But I suppose Winry and I will find out how chatty they are next week.

[Distracted. Yes.] ...You're going on a fishing trip with Winry.

Yeah. She said it would remind her of home and she wanted to come along.

[Interesting. And also wildly unfair. To tease, or to shut the book and go back to doing... nothing. Hmm. There's a choice.]

It's not a date Katara. It's fishing. Which, while fun, is horrible first date material. Not that we'd want to date anyway! I have Suki, remember?

[And there are so, so many things that she could say to that right there - but if he's really trying to be faithful to someone who isn't even here - and who she never saw him together with - well. Then she'll support that. And just smirk.]

Mmhmm. And is Winry okay with this 'killing and eating of talking animals?'
