Sokka the 16th - [Voice]

Guess this is the end of the month. I wonder if this will be the last night? After all, new people will be showing up in a few days. That would mean in one more day 'til I'm back to my normal Sokka self.

So how do you tell someone you might not love them tomorrow? Somehow I don't think opening with a joke is a good idea. But if you happen to have a really good one, feel free to share.

If both of you know about the situation, then it should be easier to come to gripes with, shouldn't it?

I hope it's that easy. But who am I kidding? I'm Sokka. The universe wouldn't let me have it that easy.

I wasn't sure of it at first. It makes sense now, when I think about it.

Ah, you don't have to be like that. Even if it may get tough, you have friends to support you.

[a nod]

You might wanna tell Zuko to hide.

Yeah. Good idea.

Unfortunately it's just a fact of my existence.

Although if the universe wants to prove me wrong here, I'll take it.

[Katara and Zuko have plans tonight, but a question like that from her brother is enough to put them on hold.]

Are you all right?

[This is Sokka's troubled voice. Note the lack of squeaky excitement there.] I talked to Toph.

... I really shouldn't have.

[Hooo boy.]

OK. I'm coming. Where are you?

If the universe won't, then I'll be there to lend a hand. We're friends, right? I'll do my best to put you at ease whenever you need it, buddy!

... outside the house.

[More specifically, he's on the ground, resting against the Valentine's tombstone.]

[He sighs.] Thanks, Tormod. [Right now he's not worried about himself, it's Toph. He doesn't even bother to get your name wrong.]

In the cold? [Sigh.] I'll be right there.

[And so Katara comes to find Sokka, blankets in tow.] Hey. [And there's a twinge at noticing where he's sitting. She will sit down beside him, pass him a blanket and set up her own.] So what happened?

Best of luck to you, then. You're a smart guy, it'll be all right.

[Sokka ignores the blanket, not really looking up as she sits down.] Hey.

[She rolls her eyes and unfolds the blanket over his legs. Other than that, she'll just sit there and wait.]

I told Toph it wasn't real.

...

What made you say that?

[Please remember, dear brother, that you are talking with someone who is also extremely affected.]

Because regardless of how I feel, I'm smart enough to know that come tomorrow, it's going to be Suki I'm in love with. [His head tilts back, resting against the stone.] But not smart enough to just keep my stupid mouth shut.

[Upset Katara is upset. A statement like that rips the rug right out from underneath her, and she really wants to yell at him and call him on it. But he's so obviously upset that she is going to try to be calm.]

...you don't know that, Sokka. How could anything take our memories and all our feelings and just -- change them? It's not as if we'd fallen in love with some strangers. It's Zuko and Toph.

[...and ohcrap, did she just admit that she was in love? To Sokka? ...time to move on quickly.] You should go after her.

[Unfortunately they can. But he doesn't see the need to drive Katara away too. He figures she'll have to deal with all of that on her own come morning.]

I don't know where she is. Probably underground somewhere.

[Pause. Then she speaks quietly.] ...Sokka. In all the time that I don't remember... did Toph's parents ever once go after her?

[Ouch.] ... no. [Not that there was much of an opportunity for them too, but still.]

...[There are times when she would cheerfully freeze Toph's parents to the side of a boat.]

You should go after her, Sokka. You should at least try. Even if you're right and this isn't... real, she's still our friend. She should know you looked for her.

[He sighs.] I know. You're right. [He stands up and picks up his sword, putting it back in its place.] ... I might not be back home tonight.
