Appointments Post

This post is for threading with Sokka anytime and anywhere. It can be used for Action or the Ring feature on journals to get in contact with him for personal conversations.

You're right. New Feather season's practically just started. And... she's mentioned a lot of people who could show up. But... she could also be the only one from her time, like Roku. [Or that's just because not even the Malnosso care for Sozin.]

Could be. Either way, there might be things in the future we won't like. We should decide how much we want to find out.

[I already know things I don't want to know.]

Y-yeah. Things like... not asking if we're still alive or anything would be good places to start. If there's older people, we can explain stuff like that to them, and they'll understand.

Yeah. That kind of stuff.

[Like. What happens to him and Suki.]

[Of course, there isn't really a way to restrain Ikki ~~even if she coincidentally tends to avoid unestablished things~~, but they'll have to manage with that.]

Yeah, I'm pretty good with what I know already. [Trying to avoid slipping any of the darker things he learned, he puts on a light grin.] So, Sokka... you ready to be a great uncle?

Believe it or not? I've already got practice at it. Sort of. [A pause.] It's complicated.

Something tells me that the only explanation you need is saying the word "experiment".

[A nod.] I was Toph's dad.

Well... that's a new level of weird.

You think that's weird? Katara's son was a few years older than her.

That... is really weird. They made someone else her son? She didn't... have a husband too, did she?

I think she adopted. It's kind of fuzzy now.

[He laughs a little nervously.]

Oh right, those experiments and their memory problems. I can't even remember half the people I met when I was Robin. [Pause] Not that it would have bothered me or anything!

Sometimes it's better that way. I've got memories from being the Avatar I'd really, really like to forget.

[He looks down into his tea.]

I... I see. They do make us live horrible lives sometimes. [Being Robin had its fun, but Gotham was nightmare city. He's grateful most of those memories are gone. He pauses for a moment.] Ikki deserves so much better.

[Sokka turns his head to watch the girl outside. He finds himself thinking about Elicia. How much that poor girl had gone through already.]

... maybe she won't be here long.

[His breath stops for a moment at the thought. But he knows it would be for the best. That everything else he's feeling is selfish.]

I... I hope so. Things have felt really bad for me lately, but her just being here has... has kinda helped me feel so much better. But she'd... be safe back home. Just knowing that she exists... that should be enough. [Like the girlfriend awaiting back home. But unlike her, Aang knows that he will never end up seeing Ikki while he's alive.]

Yeah. [The mention of Korra, the Avatar, has made Sokka realize the same thing about Aang. And he cannot blame him for wanting Ikki to stay. It's nice, in it's own way, to have her here. It makes home seem... better. Yet scarier at the same time.]

It's going to be hard if she doesn't. The Malnosso don't make it easy to protect people. Even kids.

I don't... I don't want to imagine. I don't want to let her down at all, but I feel so helpless here. I feel like I haven't been able to protect anyone. [He remembers the draft, where he kept on freezing up and messing up, got trapped in a dream world and tried killing so many people in the Avatar State. And maybe he could have saved Katara's friend if he wasn't stuck like that.]

[What does he say? He could tell Aang that he's done his best. Or that he'll find a way. Or something. But that's probably what Katara's told him. And Sokka is a little more... realistic than that.]

That's how it is here. Sometimes you can protect people, sometimes you can't. It's great when you can, but you learn to live with it when you can't. I don't want to see her hurt anymore than you do, but... [A breath. He looks at Aang, instead of outside.] You have to be ready when it happens.

[He takes a moment to absorb his words and push away any imaginings of the situation where it would be needed, closing his eyes tightly as he does so. He then opens them, returning Sokka's look.]

Then... then I'll have to be. I'll... I'll be there for her as much as this place will let me, as long as we're here. If it's all I can do. [He takes a sip of tea.] I should start her exercises soon.

[A nod and he looks away, loosening a little.]

Yeah. Good luck.

Thanks. It might not be too much work. It sounds like her dad [my son] is a great teacher. [Good thing he didn't consult Meelo.]

[He rises from his seat and looks outside. But he then turns around to face Sokka and puts a hand on his shoulder.]

And I hope you're feeling better, too, Sokka.

[There's a wince, small and almost imperceptible, as Aang says that. It reminds him of what Aang doesn't know yet. But Sokka. He only nods. He'll feel better. Eventually.]

[He smiles and lightly pats the shoulder.]

Seeya later. Meditation time!

[He keeps all these new thoughts in him, but he won't let them weigh him down. It's time to teach his granddaughter Airbending.]
