Over two months ago, Sokka died. His penalty was something incredibly intangible. It took from him his empathy, his ability to love, and so many other things. He didn't have a way of describing it, but he was empty. In truth, he wasn't sure he felt anything. There was nothing that truly touched him on the inside.

More than a week ago, Sokka left for a mission. A week and a half with the Depot where they instituted the kind of justice he could appreciate. He certainly felt no remorse when he shot a man for stealing water. When bandits attacked the depot, they rounded up most of them and then strung them up for their trouble. It was a simple morality and for a short while, things actually made sense. Not like the gray morality in Luceti, where people were stupid enough to think that sparing the lives of murderers and thieves meant anything.

And then he got his reward. Cashing in the bulk of mission points he'd accumulated for over a year, he was given what he really coveted the most. Power. And now he had it. As he walked into Luceti, he imagined that he could feel the difference. It was not quite so dramatic as what he had been given by the Rogue Malnosso, but he was content with the knowledge that he'd be keeping what he'd earned. There'd be no scientists taking it away from him this time.

It's mid-day when Sokka returns to town and he's still wearing the cowboy hat he took to the Depot with him. Maybe it doesn't exactly mesh with the Water Tribe clothes he's accustomed to, but he likes it. The hat makes him feel gritty and intimidating. He'll eventually get tired of hat hair, though. Just not today.

So today for his time spent back in Luceti, he heads home to greet whoever might be there. He checks in Foo Foo, the saber toothed moose lion he received from Christmas. It's getting quite big now, having reached the size of medium-sized dog. The tips of his antlers are even starting to become a bit more visible. Although the animal does seem quieter around Sokka, its at least obedient and follows him as he goes about Luceti. For today that includes the Smithy until evening, the Library for an hour, back at House 56 for dinner, and then out in the forest to try and teach Foo Foo to hunt.

The next morning, he makes sure that Okita Souji will meet him for their training session. Sokka is looking forward to seeing the results.

"Maybe, but it was the only time we've ever had any hand to bet with."

There was that as well. She huffs out a frustrated sigh. "Point. Maybe a slim shot is better than none, but it'd have been awful if you'd missed." Who knows what the Malnosso might have done in retaliation? It wasn't a pleasant thought. She changed the subject. "So what did that have to do with this time?"

He shrugged nonchalantly. "Nothing much really, I just went back. it was pretty much the same, for better or or worse."

"The same? But there was no FTSA attack this time. Right?"

"Just a few bandits. But we wrapped that up easily."

"That's a very disappointing end to Storytime with Sokka. You could have at least thrown in an explosion or two."

"Well, I did throw one of my exploding boomerangs at them."

Artemis laughs at that. "Something about that seems backwards. That is a boomerang you really don't want coming back to you."

"Generally speaking, it doesn't. But you never know when you need to hit something at a curved angle. Or something behind you."

"I'll take your word for it," Artemis is grinning, because she's still amused by the fact that he fights with a boomerang, but hey, she had seen him in action and he was pretty decent with it. She nudged one of the weapons he was working on curiously. "So what's all this then?"

"Just cleaning up. Everything is filled with sand and a little blood, so I'm just cleaning up all the weapons I took with me."

Presently it was his sword, which was a familiar weapon given he was almost never parted from it. Now that she had a time to look at the blade, it was fairly obvious that it was of an exquisite construction that put everything else Sokka had to shame. In general, everything in the shop didn't match up to the quality of that brilliantly black sword.

"You know how to sword fight too?" She hadn't seen this one before and she peered at it curiously. She wasn't an expert, but she knew quality when she saw it. "Aren't you full of surprises."

"You should have paid attention more." He cleaned the blade with a rag before sheathing it again. "I'm very, very good at it."

"And yet you fight with a boomerang." She tosses her hands in the air, playfully exasperated. "That makes perfect sense."

Not that she was one to talk, considering she still fought with a bow and arrow.

"I also have several knives, a hatchet, and a club. I just like being well equipped."

They were his security blanket. Some people had cell phones or teddy bears or trinkets. Sokka had an arsenal.

"Considering what the action's been like I've seen so far, I can't really blame you. Nothing like being prepared for anything." She had her own fair share of knives and small weapons hidden in her belt as well, not to mention her quiver. She didn't like being caught off-guard.

"And I do like being prepared. Actually, I was getting to be a pretty good shot with a pistol. Way better than I was last time at the Depot." He was considering that maybe it'd be nice to have one all the time.

"They can be pretty handy. Noisy, though," she agreed. She knew how to use one, but rarely did. She preferred stealth. And anyway, her team had a thing about guns.

"That's the downside, right? The noise. But in a big battle, that really doesn't matter much."

"Sometimes, no. Reloading can be a pain, though. So can running out of ammo. But there's a reason modern soldiers and armies have all moved onto guns and things."

"Tell that to the cultists." It did amaze him that the cultists presented a credible threat to the highly efficient and well equipped Malnosso soldiers.

"I'd rather not, actually," she retorts wryly. "Then again I have a hard time thinking of them as modern either. Maybe it's the wings?"

"It must be the wings. It explains why you're still using a bow."

She rolls her eyes. "Don't underestimate the bow. I seem to recall making you eat those words last time you did."

"Huh. That's strange. Because I seem to remember you being mostly just in the way."
