[Today? Sokka is at the smithy. Honestly, are we really surprised by this? Seriously, this is kind of his thing. He is waiting for Winry, though. He wants her input on a project.]

It's been two weeks since the equinox. And we're finally getting a break from all the rain. Funny how the new season just kind of Springs up on you like that, am I right?

[Oh Sokka, you are hi-lar-ious. He wipes a tear from his eye even, pleased that he managed to let such a well-seasoned joke be released into the wild. Oh, speaking of wild.]

No but seriously, now that it's getting that time of year, how many people out here hunt and fish? I know, I know. Boo hoo, the talking animals. I've heard it. But is there anyone here besides me who still does that kind of thing?

[Also, lately Sokka is keeping a new little trinket in one of his pockets. It's something he intends to give to someone at the right time. After the small blunder of forgetting to bring it on Suki's birthday, he's keeping it all the time on him now. So even as he's walking away from home, he'll often put his hand in his pocket to make sure it's still there. He probably won't show it to just anyone, though.]

Basically, what it means is that in a world, there will be a vibe that the world has, sometimes. And if something is adhering to that vibe, basic laws of physics or logic might be broken in ways that those of us not from that world might find silly, but people in that world take for granted. Like how in ghost sorties people always happen to go to the haunted house in the first place, right?

So what you're saying is that our lives are... governed by convenient storytelling.

[Well yes, but she falters a moment before defensively putting out:] Is that all that different than those people who believe in things like fate or destiny?

Yeah, but people like that don't exactly have their heads screwed on right.

I do admit, most worlds pretty much don't make sense. Mine included. It's like science doesn't matter anywhere. Even in Winry's world, they act like their magic stuff is some kind of fancy kind of science.

Well magic could be based on a scientific principle, you know. Alchemy follows a certain set of laws.

[Al kinda.. drilled that into her]

Sure. Bending is based on martial arts. But science is supposed to be something that can be duplicated. I'm pretty sure no amount of lessons is going to let me do alchemy.

Yeah, but it can be replicated in their world. In theory, anyone who studies it should be able to do it based on what Al's told me.

But only in their world. You should be able to make a light bulb in any world, if you know how to do it.

Not if the world didn't have the same basic elements with which to make the filament and such. Or if the principle of electricity worked differently.

Okay, I'll grant you the first one, but the second one? Really?

That's ridiculous. [He's kind of worried his world might be like that. What if it's impossible for his world to progress past its current technology that mostly relies on benders?]

Well duh, but it doesn't mean it's not possible! I mean technically, it should be conventionally impossible to go beyond the speed of light, but there's tons of people here who can travel the stars in practical times. So it's a simple fact that basic physical laws differ between worlds.

[Though she not so secretly believes/hopes that relativity is wrong in her Earth too]

Well... sure. I suppose that makes sense. Or maybe they just know how to do stuff our worlds haven't figured out yet.

But if you're going to assume then, then in theory magic could be something you just haven't figured out how to replicate.

Well... that means it should be possible for us, right? Assuming it's not the kind of thing you have to be born being able to do, there should be some kind of magic anyone can learn that isn't Filial magic.

Seriously! If I could find something I can sink my teeth into, magic-wise, I'd be all over that!

Well if you're right, it stands to reason there's something we should be able to learn.
