After being incensed by Sanji, Sokka sought out a sword master to 'even things up' between himself and his sister. Who he found was Okita Souji, a rather eccentric swordmaster from Japanese history. Although girly and not all that impressive looking, Sokka soon realized just how tough he actually was. His trollish and childish antics both amuse and frustrate Sokka.
From Souji, Sokka has been learning Tennen Rishin style. Among its disciplines include kenjutsu, bojutsu, and jujutsu.
Thanks to Haruhi, Sokka is aware of Okita Souji's deadly illness. This is a frequent cause of concern for Sokka, who is frustrated that Souji seems so content with his own fate. After Toph's duel with Souji, Sokka has seen just how bad its become, making him much more concerned.
After encountering Souji as a child, he is now aware that Souji was forbidden from swordplay as a child and was a lot more serious then. He doesn't know why yet.
