Originally Sokka and Fenimore did a lot of arguing and mostly disliked each other. Over time they became closer and closer, especially after Fenimore's best friend, Shirley, was sent home. She is now one of the people is closest to. Between experiences and experiments, she's like family.
During the love experiment in 2011, the two fell in love. They had one day of romance before complications with Suki separated them. He still can't help but find her attractive.
Complicating things further, another experiment had her not only as a child, but Sokka believed he was her father. Although she turned to her old self afterward, he still has leftover fatherly feelings for her. The combination of that and the attraction makes things awkward.
