[When Sokka opens the journal, he does it with a very specific purpose and yeah, maybe it's New Feather season and the aftermath of some dumb experiment, but he has some news that he's been sitting on for awhile. News that only two or three people outside of the Avatar house are even aware of. So today, around lunch period at school, Sokka heads around the building, facing the playground, to make an announcement he'd been putting off for a bit. Not because he didn't want to make it, but it was hard to do it with people being all ragey with the Malnosso. Maybe a few days of New Feathers will have cooled them off?]

Hey everyone. So... this is actually a few weeks late, but uh, that experiment kind of got in the way and New Feathers showing up and... anyway. Forget all that.

If you guys happen to see Suki around town, say hi to her for me. After all, she's the future Missus Thunderaxe. [He allows that to sink in a bit.] Because, you know, we're engaged now. Just saying. Nice pretty necklace and everything. One of my best works, if I do say so myself.

[Yeah, yeah. He's feeling good about that, okay. Like, solid. Whatever that means. Anyway, he decided that tonight he is making dinner. That means he's going to the grocery and stocking up on steaks. He wants to make steak burgers, because he's heard about them (somewhere) and they sounded awesome. From Luceti he had decided he liked steak and he liked hamburgers, so a combination? Gotta be a winner. Nevermind that he's just getting regular old steaks and plans to just put those on a hamburger bun. He'll realize the bones are gonna be a problem later on.

He'll make his customary appearance at the smithy to help New Feathers with weapons. He'll also be around school during the appropriate times for that. In the evening, after his dinner fiasco, he'll be down by the river, on the southern end of town, making some modifications to see if he can't make it sea worthy. Like adding a sail. He's pretty unsatisfied with the results though. Looks like he may need to just make a new boat from scratch. Which necessitates another voice post in the evening. But only after excluding a certain pirate. No offense, Jack, but he wants his own boat.]

So... ship building. Anyone want to help make one? A big one. Not huge, just... sea worthy with a nice strong sail. And good for bringing in lots of fish, too. Any help would be good. Just materials would go a long way.

I know, right? Anyway, it was just in the Battle Dome. We had... super powers, I guess. It seemed like a good place to test them.

[ aha. the battledome made a lot of sense. ] I didn't realize it could be real places. I wonder if it can do now-destroyed ones, too.

It seems to be able to go anywhere. Though it's not exactly somewhere you go to relax. There's almost something attacking you there.

[ you don't even want to know how many front windows she's had to have replaced. ]

Really? Generally if I was in the South Pole I could take a walk and not get attacked. You'd think the Malnosso could at least let us turn the bad guys off.

It was a weird night in Sunnydale if I didn't get attacked.

[ a thought: ] Maybe we just need the right techno-geek to hack it. [ where's willow when you need her? ]

... maybe. [The only person he knows like that is Donatello. He has no clue how much the turtle has messed with it. Sokka may be pretty intuitive, but even a year in Luceti isn't enough to make him a techno-geek. Just a steampunk-geek.] But if the Malnosso don't want us to do something, they usually make sure we can't.

Either way, maybe I'll have to fire up some good old slices of Sunnydale. [ she had only ever had the dome give her generic graveyards, before. and a walk down the main street -- even clogged with demons -- would be incredibly welcome. ]

... I've not really used it to go home, personally.

[It would just make him miss home more. And it wouldn't be real enough to be worth it.]

I don't blame you.

[ a pause. ] But even if I was home, I couldn't technically go home anyway. So this might be my only chance.

[ ~~until the comics sob.~~ ]

Err, what do you mean by that?

Just over a year before I even showed up here, my hometown got crater'd. It's actually impossible to go back to my house seeing as it doesn't even exist anymore.

Crater'd!? What happened... was it a giant meteorite!?

Not quite. More like one big, finale-having battle.

... so you lost. [He can't imagine 'crater' being a victory. But with the way Buffy talks, it's also hard to imagine her having lost either...]

Won, actually. The place was evacuated. It was kind of an only way out scenario.

Oh, right. Well, that's good. Even if you lost your home. [Not a decisive victory, but it's the people that matter.]

The underneath of the city was infested with countless ubervamps. It -- well, better to do the magical equivalent of nuke the place than slay them one by one.

That's one way to do it, I guess. [What a way to finish things though. Man.]

Can't blame you for wanting to go back. I wouldn't mind seeing my village from before it was hit by all the raids.

[ she doesn't quite like the sound of that. ]

Yeah, from the Fire Nation. They first started a hundred years ago.

[Yeah, it sucked. But while his tone may be more serious, it's just... one of those things he's accepted, got over, and doesn't let it bother him. Besides, it's not something that will happen again now.]

...I'm hoping this story doesn't end in a ka-boom.

There was a few along the way. None at home, though. They mostly stopped when there wasn't much of us left.
